I started having AFIB issues (non-valve related.) Okay, I take Sotalol (Betapace) to regulate my heart and I take other heart meds too, mostly to thin my blood and control blood pressure. When the Sotalol stopped working, I was having AFIB episodes pretty frequently, having to call the squad, use oxygen, go to the emergency room, and so on. My cardiologist (at the Ohio State University Hospital) wanted to stick me on Tikosyn, (a bad drug as far as I'm concerned because it's linked to a lifetime commitment of going back to the clinic to adjust the dosage and you can't just go off it or you'll have violent withdrawal.) There's also a lot we don't know about the drug so it is a last resort from my view.
By pure chance, someone mentioned Magnesium tablets to me. Well, one laughs this stuff off when you've been through what I have because somebody (who doesn't have heart trouble) is always suggesting some manner of snake oil cure. For the heck of it I read a lot of testimonials online and, to my surprise, many people with similar problems as I have ended their AFIB with Magnesium.
I can tell you that I did NOT want to do Tikosyn, which also involved a three-day hospital stay to get me off the Sotalol, (and an almost guaranteed bad AFIB episode when they did), so I tried it. My first try, I didn't do it right. I took a type of Magnesium that was only about 27 mg. That is not nearly enough. BUT I had a minor AFIB episode, much less painful than previous ones, and I took 200 mg of these pills and I converted back to normal rhythm in record time, about 6 hours. It usually took 14-20 hours.
I re-read the literature online and landed on *this* product, Magnesium Glycinate 400 mg, which I take twice daily, religiously. That was four months ago and I have not used Oxygen nor had an AFIB episode since. My regular physician encouraged me to partake of this experiment because it was cheap and easy. I changed nothing else in my meds (continuing the Sotalol) and added the Magnesium. Success! Since my experiment, my doctor is telling all his non-valve AFIB patients about it because it *might* work for them too. I have experienced no side effects from this product.
I will tell you to forget taking Magnesium Oxide that you get at Wal-Mart because your body cannot absorb it. There are some other alternatives but this one is best of all. It doesn't really matter what brand you buy as long as it is *Magnesium Glycinate 400 mg*. The manufacturers cannot tell you all this but I can. If it works for you as it has done for me, then it was worth my time to write this review. If not, well it didn't cost you much to find out.
Oh yeah, WHY do cardiologists not talk about this stuff? Because Tikosyn guys make money on Tikosyn therapy, stent guys make money on stents. If you go to a Tikosyn guy and say, "What do you think I need?" he's going to say, "Tikosyn." But they can't make much on peddling magnesium pills. That's the best way I know how to explain it.
If you have any questions for me on this or about details of my medicines, etc., please feel free to ask. I have no financial connections with this product or with this company. I ordered this particular brand by mere chance. I should tell you than I'm 60 years old and a smoker. Highly recommended.
I get insomnia on occasion, and sleep and I do not cross paths--sometimes for weeks on end.
This helped me so much more than anything I have ever taken.
I do not drink, smoke, or any of that, not even coffee. No chocolate. I run clean (as someone who runs on trails, pun intended!) No dairy, no eating of the things that could keep a human up at night.
I took two of these about two hours before bed, did the usual sleep routine, lights down, read boring book, shower off one hour before bed (drop in body temp to activate sleep), and meditate sleep yoga.
Now, peer review articles have some info on this thing.
Glycinate is the preferred ion of choice with most metals you will take. An oxide is meant to clean your insides out before a colonoscopy, avoid!
Glycinate is the least impactful when it comes to intestinal mobility.
Now, for the magnesium part. This is known to activate the parasympathetic nervous, and it binds to GABA receptors in the same way that Ambien does.
But here's the thing, gabapentin, which this is not, slows the heartrate through the NTS pathway.
However, magnesium DOES act on GABA, and for me, and maybe you, this could be dangerous.
I say this because if you are deficient in magnesium, for certain if you received a magnesium sulfate via IV, your HR and BP are gonna drop, by a lot. Caution is used in these infusions because you can go into a coma. Seriously kids.
NOw, mag glycinate, is going through the GI tract, totally different kind of absorption there.
However, for me this is risky because I have a resting HR of 33 (not joking, no I do not need a pacemaker, yes I have been a runner since age 5) and my usual BP is 100/60 or 90/60.
I can tell when I have too much of this in my system, which can build up over time. I tracked my BP one night with my cuff and scope before falling asleep more than once to be 76/58, which was coffee drinking salt chip time.
This is a warning that your pharmacist would be able to confirm. YOu would have to take a bunch to get to that point, but for someone like me, my operating system runs at slower speeds internally, so something that causes a decrease for me could be dangerous.
Nonetheless, this knocks me out. All night.
PS--dreams are cray cray as people state but again, this is because it acts on GABA as the same way Ambien does. It is not ambien, and ambien is not magnesium, but know this.
Sweet dreams.
Count those sheep!
